Led by Bay Village's Richard Patrick, Filter headlined last night's Scene Music Awards showcase/Cleveland Music Festival kick-off at Peabody's. Just back from an European tour, Patrick's relatively new set of band mates sounded sharp as they played Filter tunes such as "(Can't You) Trip Like I Do" and "Take a Picture." The group's hour-long set came at the end of a long night of music that featured close to 20 different acts playing on four different stages. Winner of the award for Best Male Vocals, Brent Kirby kicked off the show with a roots rock set that benefited from Peabody's heavy duty sound system. Seafair, winners of "Best New Breakthrough Band," delivered an exuberant set of orchestral pop, and the Teddy Boys played a set of garage rock tunes that simultaneously sounded retro and contemporary. Texas Plant, a local group that mixes punk and old-time music, had fans dancing while they delivered an acoustic set on the small Pirates Cove stage. DJ Kosherkuts deftly mixed pop and hip-hop upstairs at Rockstar. Because fans didn't realize Rockstar was open, he played to a tiny crowd but didn't let that deter his enthusiasm. Though Filter didn't draw as a big of a crowd as you'd think they would (they are hometown heroes, after all), the variety of music made the night worthwhile.
