Chances are, most current clubgoers don't think of dance music outside the context of raved-up synth melodies, trancey bass riffs, and four-on-the-floor kick beats. But Nickodemus and Osiris, both longtime resident DJs at New York's Giant Step Records parties, would never be satisfied with such a limited sonic palette. Both jocks like to incorporate multicultural rhythms and motifs into their percussion-heavy mixes, slapping samba and Afrobeat tunes down alongside jazzy hip-hop and soulful house tracks in their ongoing attempts to show dancers just how universal "the groove" really is. Nickodemus has even spiced up his monthly Turntables on the Hudson parties by inviting members of such New York outfits as Antibalas and Groove Collective to provide live percussion accompaniment to his DJing. Cleveland clubgoers can likely expect the same type of live collaboration when Nickodemus and Osiris take to the turntables at Touch this Saturday. Beat a path to the door.
