Oberlin is usually buzzing with interesting musical events, but this Friday’s agenda is especially packed. If everything runs on schedule, you can even make it to two of these three events. There are two free concerts that begin at 6:30 pm. New York’s new music group The Wet Ink Trio (a subset of the larger Wet Ink Ensemble) performs “hydra | the children of fire” in Stull Recital Hall. Guest artist Sara Snider will open with a solo electronic set, then the Trio will play Eric Wubbels’s the children of fire come looking for fire (2012, for violin & prepared piano) & Sam Pluta’s hydra (2014, for violin, piano & live electronics).
At the same hour in Kulas Recital Hall, flute professor Alexa Still and piano professor Monique Duphil have an interesting recital planned that includes Robert Dick’s Fish Are Jumping (1999), Robert Schumann’s Three Romances, Op. 94, John Purser’s Piobaireachd for Solo Flute – Wai Taheke (2006) & Georges Enesco’s Violin Sonata No. 3, Op. 25.
You’ll need tickets for the 8:00 event in Finney Chapel, when pianist Sir Andràs Schiff performs the last sonatas of four celebrated composers on the Oberlin Artist Recital Series. The playlist features Joseph Haydn’s Sonata in C, Hob. XVI:50 (1794), Ludwig van Beethoven’s Sonata No. 30 in E, Op. 109 (1820), Wolfgang Amadè Mozart’s Sonata in C, K. 545 (1788) and Franz Schubert’s Sonata in c, D. 958 (1828). It’s Valentine’s Day on Sunday. Instead of chocolates and flowers, try treating your sweetest to some romantic music.
On Saturday, February 13 at 7:30 pm, Steven Eva and the Chagrin Studio Orchestra welcome pianist Dmitri Levkovich back to the Chagrin Valley Little Theatre for a “Valentine’s Day Extravaganza” featuring Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3. (The Canadian pianist won the silver medal in the 2009 Cleveland International Piano Competition). The evening’s a benefit for the orchestra, so tickets are robustly priced at $75 ($50 deductible). That includes refreshments by Andrew Yanek of the Cuyahoga Group and wines selected by Kurt & Yolanda of Chuck’s Fine Wines. Reserve online.
Also on Saturday at 8:00 pm, Cleveland Shakespeare Festival and Great Lakes Light Opera will present “Scenes of Love (Or Something Near It),” with excerpts and musical selections from works by Shakespeare at Bop Stop. Tickets at $55 for couples include two cocktails (book online here).
On Valentine’s Day itself, Duo Mignarda (Ron Andrico, lute, and Donna Stewart, voice) will sing and play love songs from early 17th-century France at The Galleries at CSU, 1307 Euclid Avenue. $15 at the door, chocolates and art included.. Looking for a free event on Sunday? Heights Chamber Orchestra will present Laura Lindauer, soprano, and Timothy Culver, tenor, in “Music for Lovers” at 3:30 pm at Bohemian National Hall (4939 Broadway).
In the mood for something more spiritual? Soprano Margaret Carpenter will be featured in the Church of the Covenant’s next Vespers Service on Sunday at 5:00 pm in University Circle. She’ll perform François Couperin’s amazing Leçons du tenebre, among other French baroque pieces.
And the Valentine’s Day spirit continues into next week, when tenor JR Fralick will sing a “Concert for Valentine’s Week” on the Brownbag Series at Trinity Cathedral across from CSU in downtown Cleveland. Bring a lunch or buy one for $5. Freewill offerings welcome.
