Southern Lord are best known for releasing top-quality doom records, but they also dip into speedier sounds from time to time. Masakari's debut album is one of the fastest and hardest records in their catalog. A brutal hardcore band in the vein of Converge and legendary Tokyo bashers G.I.S.M., Masakari roar through ten tracks in less than 28 minutes on The Profit Feeds. Christopher Hitchens tears into religion here, and the astonishing "Outro" must be heard to be believed. The riffs are ferocious, the drumming is relentless, and the vocals are a bloody-throated croak. A synthesis of black metal and punk, NorseLaw's latest album moves away from the Viking-themed rap-metal found on their previous albums. There's still some rapping (the dunderheaded "Sex in the City"), but these guys are more about the metal these days. A greasy guitar riff runs through "Conspiracy," wailing falsetto vocals distinguish the epic "I Think I'm Dying," and "Cyborg Lover" is a rapid-fire onslaught that has more in common with Motörhead than Limp Bizkit. Plus, "Who Made Rock & Roll Just for Girls" is a stop-and-go anthem buoyed by punk-rock spirit.
