Prepare for one extended Maalox moment at the Phantasy Theater this weekend, when the Ohio Deathfest returns after a three-year hiatus. It'll take a strong constitution and an even stronger stomach to make it through Gorgasm's "Charred Vaginal Effluence" or Goratory's "Total Eclipse of the Fart," but for extreme-metal blood fiends, the Deathfest is as good as it gets.

Of course, by "good" we mean hideous, depraved, and morally indefensible. With 40-plus bands playing over two days, this year's lineup is headlined by Origin, one of the most technically dizzying death-metal troupes ever. Its drummer has a way of cradling his sticks in his hands so that he hits the snare and the rim of the snare at almost the same time, making the band's blast beats sound twice as fast. The result is a band so blindingly brutal, it has to be heard to be believed. Elsewhere, the bill is loaded with doom-death forebear Incantation, Columbus black-metal pace-setter Acheron, Cleveland thrash behemoth Soulless, and dozens of others. Better start stocking up on the antacids now.
