Confirming that you never know just what you're going to get on a package tour, this grouping contains one authentic hip-hop legend (producer Pete Rock, who helped define the genre's early '90s Golden Age), one one-hit wonder (singer Truth Hurts, the former Dr. Dre protégé whose 2002 solo debut included "Addictive," a song that helped kick off urban music's fascination with Indian beats), and one underrated vet (Mr. Cheeks, a former member of the Lost Boyz and maker of good-times hip-hop often overshadowed by his harder-edged New York contemporaries).
The connection that sparked this 16-date national tour is that Rock produced the latest album from Mr. Cheeks, Ladies and Ghettomen, infusing it with the soulful samples and chunky beats that have become his trademark. Truth Hurts is touring behind her latest, Ready Now, released on Raphael Saadiq's Pookie label, while Rock is working his recent Soul Survivor II, which attempted to boost his own checkered solo career by featuring a long-awaited reunion with rapper C.L. Smooth, with whom he created the 1992 classic Mecca and the Soul Brother.
