Robin Thicke’s ‘Paula’ Misses the Mark

The success of singer Robin Thicke's last album, 2013's Blurred Lines, stemmed from the fact that the Pharrell Williams-produced title track was such a monster hit. Thicke shows no signs of repeating that success with this follow-up album. "You're My Fantasy" is a lukewarm love song that features a bit of flamenco-like guitar and lots of moaning from the soul/R&B singer as he croons "can't get too much of you babe." Yuck! The rest of the album is equally tepid. Thicke practically whispers his way through "Get Her Back" and tries too hard to sound sultry on "Love Can Grow Back." He sounds a bit more engaged on the piano ballad "Still Madly Crazy" but it's not enough to redeem the song's clichéd lyrics about falling in love. Thicke is in good form on the randy "Whatever I Want," a song that features a funky guitar riff and soulful vocals, but it's the exception on this lackluster effort.
