Update: Earlier today, the Rock Hall announced that 2004 Hall of Fame Inductee Jackson Browne and singer-songwriter Valerie June will join Mavis Staples for her appearance on Sept. 20 as part of the Honors Award Series.

The day before the concert, the Voice: A Symposium on Mavis Staples will be held at Tinkham Veale Ballroom at Case Western Reserve University to celebrate Mavis’ musical and cultural impact.

The featured panel of experts includes: Mark Burford, an Associate Professor of Music at Reed College and an expert in twentieth-century African American popular music; Rob Bowman, the author of Soulsville U.S.A.: The Story of Stax Records; Maureen Mahon, an associate professor in the Department of Music at New York University and author of Right to Rock: The Black Rock Coalition and the Cultural Politics of Race and Beyond Brown Sugar: Voices of African American Women in Rock and Roll, 1953-1984; and Jessica Edwards, director, producer and publicist whose first feature-length documentary Mavis! premiered on HBO in 2016.

Edwards’ film will be screened on Sept. 21 at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as part of Mavis Staples Fan Day, a day of live music, films, activities and artifacts to celebrate Staples' life and music. Two other films, Wattstax and The Last Waltz, will be screened on Sept. 20 and Sept. 22 respectively.

Original Post 8/1/2019: The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has just announced it’ll honor soul and gospel singer Mavis Staples in September as part of its new Rock Hall Honors award. The event takes place at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, at the State Theatre.

“Mavis is one of the greatest singers of all time and her signature voice has crossed musical boundaries from gospel to soul and Americana and all points between. The impact of her work is reflected by the power of music in our lives, which is what Rock Hall Honors is about,” says Greg Harris, CEO and President, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, in a press release.

Staples says she’s “thrilled” to participate in the new program.

“When my family, the Staple Singers, were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, it was exciting for the whole family,” she says. “For me to now come back on my own as a solo artist to receive this honor is just beyond belief and I know my father, Pops Staples, would be so proud. I am thrilled that they would think to honor me with this, and I can't wait for the event in September.”

The singer will deliver “a full set of her hits as well as recent releases,” and additional celebrity guests will join her.

A keynote and panel discussion celebrating Mavis’ musical and cultural impact will be held on Thursday, Sept. 19 at Case Western Reserve University.

Rock Hall Honors replaces the the longstanding Music Masters series that began in 1996 with a show honoring Woody Guthrie and continued through 2016.

Tickets will go on sale to Rock Hall Members and Donors beginning at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14, and to the general public at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 16. A limited number of premium seats and VIP packages will also be available (contact the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s development office at [email protected] or at 216-515-1201 for details).
