- Brunch bunch
Apparently, all Clevelanders need to fend off the winter chills is a little accordion music.
Last month, the Beachland Ballroom turned its weekly Sunday brunch over to the polka crowd, and the event sold out. So they’re doing it again from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Once again, the musical hosts will be the Chardon Polka Band, a group of Geauga County-based musicians who formed the group seven years ago when they were still in high school.
Led by 22-year-old accordionist Jake Kouwe, they give a youthful twist to this old-school music, which became forever associated with Cleveland through polka king Frankie Yankovic and his two big national hits in the late ’40s.
The CPB covers Yankovic’s 1947 million-seller “Just Because” — but they also give the polka treatment to Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It.”
Noted local swing dancer and instructor Valerie Salstrom will teach polka novices how to step with flair around the dance floor. The menu, in keeping with the music, will be more traditional than the club’s usual vegetarian/vegan-heavy brunch.
It’s all included in the $12 ticket price ($6 for kids under 12 at the door only.) If you want to make sure you’re not left standing on the sidewalk in the cold, you can make a reservation by calling 216.383.1124. —Anastasia Pantsios
