Lately, it seems that British adoration of American music has gone completely unrequited. We ship boatloads of unknown "the" bands across the pond, and they're showered with critical acclaim and fanatic audiences; but the poor Brits don't have it so easy. Even the successes of their big-ticket acts break up on our rocky shores. You can be a rock star playing a sold-out Brixton Academy one week and begging the promoter for gas money in Boise the next. Just ask the Stereophonics. Much to their chagrin, the Welsh trio could be poster boys for the one-way musical trend. They're chart-topping tabloid stars in jolly old England and virtually unknown here.
"It can get a little frustrating," snarls frontman Kelly Jones of the continental divide. "Beatlemania is probably only going to happen once. But you find that the people into it in the States are really into it; it's not just 'Oh yeah, that band.' They are batty about it." But more and more Yanks are also becoming batty about Stereophonics' latest album, You've Got to Go There to Come Back. They back up the collection of misty-eyed hooks and sentimental observations with an impeccable live show, and might prove themselves slow-grow heirs to the Britrock crown.
