Tempo_2

Chances are pretty slim that you'll see many glowsticks in action at Tempo_2. Carrying on in the tradition of several other experimental electronic events co-sponsored by the Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art and the Headroom Digital production crew over the last year, Tempo_2 will feature minimal beatscapes from Cleveland's own Twine and DJ Veins, and a live visual display from Phase4, as well as finely textured techno from Chicago's Magas and San Francisco laptop warrior Sutekh.

The outdoor event shouldn't be all shoegazing and chin-stroking, though, since Sutekh (born Seth Joshua Horvitz) has shown that he can get his groove on with the best of them. The tracks Horvitz has released on underground labels like Force Inc., Background, Cytrax/Delay, and his own Context imprint are equal parts sonic experimentation and driving techno. Even his live sets at festivals around the world shift from the deep tonal rumblings of slumbering factories to four-on-the-floor beats with funky bass burbles and glitchy sample tomfoolery.

Twine's Greg Malcolm rarely produces such dance-floor-accessible material, but his mix of experimental clicks 'n' cuts and hip-hop beats is far more stimulating than most laptop experimentalism, so we'll be sure to get there early for his opening set.
