Cleveland indie rockers the Modern Electric have just wrapped recording their new album, Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, and have embarked on a regional tour to try to drum up some anticipation for its release (it’s slated to come out later this year). “This is our first tour ever,” says singer-pianist-guitarist Garrett Komyati. “We have only played around Ohio and it’s the first time we’re stringing some dates together. We have day jobs and we didn’t know what we were doing. In the last year or so, we’ve gotten a management company and PR firm behind us. We feel like 2014 is a big year for us.” While the album doesn’t have a release date yet, it’s in the final stages of mastering and should be out by year’s end. The group spent three weeks in Austin recording it with producer Mike McCarthy (Spoon). “We found his name on the back of a Spoon record. We sent him [the song] ‘All We Have is Now’ and he was into it,” says Komyati. “He had a free month coming up. We thought he wouldn’t even respond. He made all our wildest dreams come true. He took our process to the next level. Most of the songs we have played live once or twice. Our Cleveland fans will be familiar with about half of the album. Where our first record was a little more acoustic guitar based, this one has a fuller sound with piano taking center stage. It’s still cinematic pop. On one or two songs, we tried to put some soul into it.” The short tour kicks off on June 16 in Minneapolis and includes a June 18 date at the Beachland Tavern.
