The White Stripes and the Von Bondies might get all the hype, but the Sights are Detroit's most potent rock band, bar none. The power trio combines the best elements of British mod (Small Faces, Yardbirds, Kinks, the Jam), '60s soul and R&B, and the heavy yet melodic stylings of early '70s hard-rock groups like Humble Pie and the Bob Seger System. The group has left its mark on two amazing albums, 2000's explosive debut Are You Green? and 2002's stellar power-pop-tinged masterpiece Got What We Want. Now signed to N.Y.C.'s Scratchie Records, the Sights are busy completing album No. 3, which should see the light of day later this year. As great as their studio output has been, they're especially engaging live, with Eddie Baranek stealing the shows we've seen with his breathtaking vocal performances, sending the punters off on a frenzied rush to the band's merchandise booth as soon as the show commenced.
