This compilation documents the astonishing response that Latin America's guitar-wielding longhairs offered their American and European counterparts back in the 1960s and '70s. In many cases, the music summons psychedelic rock's usual qualities, but it also detours into the region's indigenous sounds and other surprising terrains. Sinfonia de las Aves Brasileñas' schmaltzy organ and bird chirps sound like they've been lifted from your parents' old record collection. But when they're presented alongside garage-rockers like Los Renos' "Pequeño Salvaje," an expanded and truly exotic definition of the genre begins to emerge.
