Curren$y is a simple man. “Smoke and make music/I’m a modern day hippie,” he raps on a track off Fast Times at Ridgemont Fly, one of his many mixtapes. And that he does. The weed-smoking, Chevy-driving New Orleans native rose to fame by putting out seven free mixtapes in 2008 before signing on with independent label Amalgam Digital, which released his debut album, appropriately titled This Ain’t No Mixtape, in 2009. Formerly signed at one point to both Master P’s No Limit Records and fellow New Orleans native Lil’ Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment, Curren$y’s distinct laidback flow and creative punch lines like “Sunroof flow, so over your head” have led him to be featured as MTV’s Push Artist of the Week. While weed, cars, and clothing may be his main subject matters, Curren$y fauns over them poetically and is a prime example of how an artist can avoid a major-record label and still become successful. Although his eyes may be low, Curren$y’s music is anything but mundane. He plays the Grog Shop at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15. —Jordan Zirm
