What to Do Tonight: Major Lazer

Hipster-approved DJs Diplo and Switch are behind Major Lazer, a side project that pairs mostly anonymous dancehall artists with the duo’s bizarro beats. On last year’s debut album, Guns Don’t Kill People … Lazers Do, Major Lazer Auto-Tune a baby, bury vocals under tons of blips and beeps, and throw a few animals into the aural mix. The sex rhymes are a total waste, but Diplo and Switch’s sounds are totally awesome. Like the remixes Diplo has done for Bloc Party, Hot Chip and M.I.A. (among many others) over the past half-decade, Guns Don’t Kill People zigs and zags all over the place. By the time things settle into a groove, songs are nearly over. It should make for a frenzied night when Major Lazer, Bassnectar and DJ Vadim play House of Blues at 9 p.m. Tickets: $20. —Michael Gallucci (follow me on Twitter @mgallucci)
