Raekwon’s 1995 album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx … is one of the best hip-hop records ever made. His group the Wu-Tang Clan made only one better CD, their debut, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). And while we’re usually against sequels, Only Built for Cuban Linx … Pt. II, which came out a couple months ago, is a solid follow-up. Even though some of the coked-up street rhymes sound a bit played out 14 years later, Raekwon’s producers — including the Wu’s RZA, Dr. Dre and the late J Dilla — fire menacing old-school beats at the MC, who spits back tales of pimps, hos, guns, dealers and lots of dead double-crossers. Dread hovers over nearly every track. It’s not a pretty album, and it’s not always an easy one to listen to. But Raekwon and his guests (fellow Clanners Ghostface Killah and Method Man are here, so is Busta Rhymes and Beanie Sigel) dare you to turn away from it.
