A 3-year-old Whitehouse, OH girl who has been diagnosed with Progeria syndrome- a rare genetic disorder that makes her age 7-10 times faster than normal- is traveling to Boston this morning to take part in a clinical drug trial.
Carly Kudzia will join about 40 other kids from across the nation at Boston Children's Hospital for one week for the trial. She will receive three types of drugs over the course of the week, including lonafarnib, which helps with arterial stiffness and bone rigidity.
While the trial is suspected to reduce the aging process, it doesn't necessarily mean a cure.
"It's finally our turn, and we're going," Carly's mother, Heather, told Toledo News Now. "There's a lot more work to be done, but it's something…I'm excited and nervous, but excited."
Due to the high cost of participating in the trial, the Kudzia family will host an event called Carly's Party for the Cure in late September. Community members are encouraged to attend.
