The latest exhibition at Heights Arts showcases seven artists whose distinctly different work is all inspired by flight and “things that fly.” The exhibition opens with a reception this Thursday, April 21, from 6 to 9 p.m. Curated by founding Heights Arts board member Sharon Grossman, Things That Fly showcases the works of Stephanie Craig, Maggie Denk-Leigh, Lori Kella, Peter Larson, Lynne Norwood Lofton, Lynn O’Brien and Christopher Owen Smith.
“The exhibition takes a simple concept, flight, and explores how different artists interpret that in a variety of media,” Grossman says. “Some artists research painstakingly, and then render their view of the natural world. Others have created their own artificial worlds and histories, which raise questions about what we believe and how we act.”
Looking forward, Heights Arts hosts a gallery talk with the artists at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 19. Ekphrastacy: Artists Talk + Poets Respond offers the exhibition’s artists an opportunity to discuss their work and its evolution. Cleveland Heights Poet Laureate Christine Howey has invited local poets Skylark Bruce, Erin Gay, Azriel Johnson, Geoffrey Landis, Akeemjamal Rollins and Terry Provost to respond with original poetry inspired by select works in the exhibition.
Things That Fly remains on view through June 4 during regular gallery hours: Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Saturday from 1:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and closed Sunday and Monday. The gallery is occasionally closed before special events, please call ahead to plan your visit.
