The latest exhibition at BAYarts celebrates 10 years of high quality art exhibitions with an invitational group exhibition showcasing 10 artists, each of whom has had a solo exhibition at BAYarts during the past decade. Artists participating in this special exhibition include: Edward Beyer, Judith Brandon, John Carlson, Mary Deutschman, George Kocar, Liz Maugans, Marsha Sweet, Judy Takacs, Douglas Max Utter and Jeff Yost. BAYarts: 10 is on view in the Sullivan Family Gallery.
Founded in 1948 as “Baycrafters,” BAYarts began a major, volunteer-driven renovation and revitalization campaign in 2005. In 2006, the name was changed to reflect this revitalized attitude. Ten years later, the organization has become a west side oasis for the arts, and attracts more than 65,000 visitors each year. Its campus is located on the Cleveland Metroparks Huntington Reservation, and includes formal exhibition spaces, classrooms and a new, state-of-the-art ceramics studio.
“In just 10 short years, BAYarts has been nothing but a miracle,” says Liz Maugans, Executive Director of Zygote Presss, whose hard work was recognized as guest of honor at last year’s Moondance benefit at BAYarts. “As a resident of Bay Village, I have attended concerts, special events, meetings, weddings, exhibitions, benefits, taught classes and workshops. My kids have attended classes here, and I have used it as a resource for my own organization. It is undeniably the hotbed of arts and cultural activity on the westside. It always has great art, wonderful access and beautiful surroundings. It has been an honor to exhibit my work here, curate shows and be an integral part of this community.”
Meanwhile, the Diane Boldman Education Gallery hosts Sarah Sedwick’s The Color of Light. Sedwick earned her BFA in Illustration and Painting with a minor in Art History from the College of Art at Maryland Institute in 2001. Born in Cleveland, Sedwick has lived in Eugene, OR since 2007. In addition to maintaining an active art practice, Sedwick writes a studio blog and teaches still life and portrait painting workshops across the country. Sedwick’s exhibition showcases just a fraction of the hundreds of paintings she has created.
Both exhibitions open with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. this Friday, July 8, and remain on view through Aug. 6.
