Checking in on St. Ignatius and the First School Year with the New Drug Testing Policy

We reported earlier this year that a) St. Edward, St. Ignatius, and Gilmour Academy will begin drug-testing its students this school year and b) the president of the company selected to administer those tests, Psychemedics, is the brother of the president at St. Ed's and an Ignatius grad himself.

School started back up at St. Ignatius High School last week. The last time we caught up with an Iggy's student, it was Ben Seeley, then a senior and the opinion page editor at The Eye, the school newspaper. He penned an op-ed about the drug-testing program — an article that was spiked by school officials. We published it.

Students at St. Ignatius will begin receiving emails next month regarding their specific testing dates. Administrators at the three schools have said that parental response to the testing was overwhelmingly supportive when the program was first announced. Student input concurs, to a point. The underlying concern is aimed at whatever precedent may be set by this program.

Zach Fechter, a senior and the current opinion page editor of The Eye, told Scene that the testing has garnered plenty of debate among students and Cleveland-area residents alike:
Among my friends and peers, there’s been much talk surrounding the significance and impact of this test. More so, however, I worked for a number of weeks at a Cleveland-area law firm where much debate and discussion was held regarding the alumni response and precedent set to the testing. A good amount of individuals pay no mind to the testing, but many, including me, find this to be a serious establishment.
We haven't gotten any reports of students returning to school with shaved heads, but word is, of course, there have been plenty of joking assertions about all that.
