The city of Cleveland issued a written warning to the EMS worker who in February was captured
on video playing the circle game
in the aftermath of the incident where an elementary student brought marijuana-laced gummies to school, sickening some classmates.
That discipline was probably unnecessary, but the city found
, “You acknowledged to ‘playing a game called the circle game’ while you were on an emergency medical scene and conceded that, with afterthoughts, it was unprofessional and inappropriate for a public servant. You admitted to ‘playing the game,’ for many years, in other facets of your life and were not aware that the ‘circle game symbol’ may have an alternate meaning.”
The alternate meaning referred to here is the circle gesture as a white nationalist symbol, the connection therein
having been exaggerated and co-opted by 4chan and internet trolls in recent years. Nevertheless, its appearance almost always draws over-reactionary tweets and comments, such as when the EMS worker making the gesture was featured in video broadcast by the Today show, which prompted Twitter mobs to ping the Cleveland EMS account asking for discipline, which is how we got here today.
