For the fourth consecutive year, the Cleveland Print Room invites you to join its celebration of Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day with a special workshop. This year’s annual workshop takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 24.
"This will be our fourth year participating in Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day, which has become a signature event for the Print Room, where we also have regularly-scheduled pinhole photography workshops every six weeks throughout the year," says Cleveland Print Room Gallery Manager Jeff Curtis, who will lead the workshop again this year.
Pinhole photography is similar to traditional photography in most respects, but it differs significantly in that the camera used has no lens. Instead, it has a tiny aperture that projects an image onto light-sensitized material (film or paper). Unlike lens-based cameras, pinhole cameras have no focus. Therefore, the images have a virtually limitless depth of field.
With absolutely no experience, you’ll build your own pinhole camera, take a photograph and even upload your photo to a gallery on the Worldwide Pinhole Photo Day’s website. Learn more about this old, but not outdated, process. It might take a moment to adapt from any Instagram tendencies, but by the end of the workshop, guests will have a foundational understand of the process and the materials to continue to experiment at home.
“Pinhole photography is an easy way for people to get involved in the basics of working with analog darkroom photographic processes, yet you can get some surprisingly fantastic images on your first try,” promises Curtis. “People are always surprised and excited by the results they come up with after making their own camera out of a simple cardboard box. I love the often very surreal and dream-like images that are possible with this process — I've been a big fan of pinhole photography since I was a kid.”
The Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day Workshop is $35 for nonmembers and $30 for members, and includes all supplies. Prepaid registration is required. To register via PayPal, email
