The Associated Press
is reporting that Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty is requesting a review of Officer Roger Jones' actions on March 10, 2012 — the night he
shot and killed 20-year-old rapper Kenny Smith downtown.
What's noteworthy here is that in 2014, McGinty ruled the shooting “justified" and hailed Jones for "correctly and heroically [taking] action to protect the safety of the citizens of Cleveland."
“We want to make sure it’s looked at with a fresh set of eyes and see what they come up with,” prosecutor spokesman Joe Frolik
told the Northeast Ohio Media Group.
Earlier this month, Smith's family
was awarded $5.5 million by a federal jury in a civil case that found that Jones had used excessive force.
