Cleveland State University President Ronald Berkman has announced that he will retire next June.

The 70-year-old Berkman has been CSU's president since 2009 and has overseen an era of massive growth.

In a press release, CSU said it will mount a nationwide search for Berkman's replacement beginning next month. The search will be led by Bernie Moreno, the president of CSU's Board of Trustees and the dealer of many fancy cars.

“It’s been one of the great honors of my career to lead CSU during an amazing period of progress,” said Berkman, in the release. “Thanks to the faculty, staff, trustees and donors, and to the Cleveland community that has embraced us, we’ve brought ‘engaged learning’ to life. In so many ways, CSU is a different university than it was in 2009.”

Among other things, the University has physically transformed. In addition to new student housing — 1,000 students now live on campus — the University has built the Center for Innovation in Medical Professions, the Washkewicz College of Engineering and the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion. A film school, the state of Ohio's first, is also in the offing.

Berkman was said to have been a gifted fundraiser as well. Under his leadership, the University's endowment doubled. He is said to have raised $60 million personally, including a $10 million gift from Monte Ahuja, after whom the business school was named.

The neighborhood around CSU, the Campus District, has developed in concert with the university's growth. It is now a lively area for students and residents just east of Playhouse Square.
