The Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas has announced that Judge Joseph D. Russo, who first joined the county bench in 2001, died "unexpectedly" Saturday night at the age of 59. No additional details have been provided.

Russo received his law degree in 1991 from Case Western Reserve University School and served in private law practice before joining the county bench. Among other things, Russo served on the court's Commercial Docket, which launched in 2013 to adjudicate business disputes.

"Joe Russo has been my colleague on the Bench for 12 years, and his loss will be felt by the legal community and the citizens of Cuyahoga County," said Administrative and Presiding Judge Brendan J. Sheehan, in a press release. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Judge Russo’s family and friends."

Russo's death is the second by a sitting county judge in a single week. Judge Nancy R. McDonnell passed away on Sept. 28 at the age of 62.

"As a Court family our grief is doubled at this time," said Sheehan.
