After show opener Bob Mervak, who wrote the Armchair Expert theme song and went to high school with Kristen Bell (Frozen, The Good Place, etc.) began the evening with a medley of songs, Shephard and Padman introduced Northeast Ohio-native Monica Potter to the delight of “Armcherries” who came from all around Ohio. (Potter shouted out a dozen Cleveland- and Cuyahoga-adjacent locales to the applause of audience members scattered throughout the theater.)
Conversation topics included Potter’s childhood growing up in the Collinwood neighborhood, her journey in becoming an actor, relationships, and her experience with anxiety, as she candidly talked about a panic attack she had in the bathtub earlier that day. Potter and Shepard co-starred on the long-running show Parenthood, where she played Kristina Braverman, Crosby Braverman’s (Shepard) sister-in-law.
It was fun to be a fly on the wall while Shepard and Potter caught up on major life events in a blunt and hilarious ways typically reserved for old friends with a special bond. To his credit, this is how all of Shepard's podcast interviews feel. He's been very open about his alcoholism and general mental health and ongoing therapy, which makes him the perfect host to dig into these topics with strangers and friends on Armchair Expert. Guests tend to mirror his honesty and candor throughout each interview and this show was no different.
