Detroit Free Press Catches Up With Rocky Colavito

It's been 50 years since the ill-fated, ill-advised, all-around-stupid trade of Rocky Colavito to the Detroit Tigers by Frank "Trader" Lane.

The Free Press spoke with Colavito on a wide range of topics, many of them Tribe-related.

What was your reaction to the trade for Harvey Kuenn?

"It was at our last exhibition game, which was in Memphis, and I was standing on first base when (manager) Joe Gordon walked up to me and said I had been traded for Kuenn. I was in total shock, and I was very disappointed. It was an odd place to tell me. But as hard as it was, you just had to accept it. Neither Harvey nor I liked it. I still believe that if I had stayed with the Indians I would have had a longer and even more productive career. When you stay with one team, your name becomes synonymous with the organization."

Advice, I'm sure, the Indians could still use.
