An illegal commercial grease dump caused yellow, coagulated fat chunks to clog up pipes at Akron's Water Reclamation Facility earlier this week. Now the city is asking for help from the public to catch the culprits.
"During a time when the city is heavily investing in its sewer infrastructure, FOG [ fats, oils and grease] control is vital to maintain the proper operation of wastewater collection and treatment systems." The city said in a statement.
Blockages are not only a hassle for employees tasked with cleanup, but they can also cause sewers to overflow into waterways. Officials
say the amount of grease left in the sewer system this week points to a professional grease hauler, rather than an individual business or restaurant. But home and business owners alike are reminded to dispose of FOGs in containers that can then be thrown in the garbage.
Those with any information about the incident can call 311 (or 330-375-2311 outside of Akron).
