Collinwood night club the Beachland is a cool place to hang out Sunday afternoons, too. After some up months and some down months, the Beachland Brunch has a widely varied crowd showing up steadily every Sunday. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Slovenian-concert-hall-turned-rock-bar honors its traditional roots and hip present.
Chef Kim Homan has designed a diner menu to cover vegans and meat-eaters, from the BBQ Tofu Sandwich to the Frank Yankovic (a beer-poached sausage sandwich topped with homemade sauerkraut). A kids’ menu includes French toast sticks, green eggs and ham, and a peanut butter, jelly, and banana sandwich. And kids do show up for it, as do table-hopping music scenesters.
Sunday afternoons are much more quiet than Sunday nights, but music is still on the menu in the Beachland’s snug Tavern side. Guest DJs turn in low-volume sets. This Sunday, the Casual Encounters’ Matt Rolin spins retro psych rock like the Blues Magoos. Mothers’ Day, DJ Lawrence Caswell (the maestro behind the Beachland’s Downtown Soulville dance parties) spins R&B and Soul. The tunes change from week to week, but the vibe is always relaxed.
“It’s a day when people have time to spend a little time,” says Beachland co-owner Mark Leddy. “It’s a real weird mix of people, but it’s totally working. People seem to like it. It’s fun.” — D.X. Ferris
