"Emerald Necklace" Ice Cream Flavor Debuts Today

Summer may be drawing to a close — is that possible? — but Pierre's Premium Ice Cream and the Cleveland Metroparks have nonetheless teamed up to release a new ice cream flavor which will help supplement a fund to maintain park trails.

It's basically mint chocolate chip (see image right), but with fudge swirls and chocolate cream cookies instead of the chips. Obvs delish.

In an unveiling ceremony of sorts early Tuesday afternoon at the E 55th St. Pier, Metroparks "CEO" Brian Zimmerman scooped some ice cream for eager taste testers:

"Not only did Pierre's find a way to capture the essence of Cleveland Metroparks in a new ice cream flavor," Zimmerman was quoted in a press release, "they found a tasty way to support Cleveland Metroparks trail fund."

Pierre's donation of $2,500 joins more than 300 other donors and $75,000 since 2011 which has gone towards maintenance of existing trails and the design of new ones, the PD reports.

It's a worthy fund indeed. And good on Zimmerman and the gang (I guess) for securing corporate partners and big ticket donations/sponsors. It just makes all the desperate lobbying for the levy in 2012,  a levy which easily passed — people love the Metroparks — and now nets CMP a cool $73 million per year, all the more befuddling.

After all, seeing as how the Metroparks have shifted dramatically from nature-centric to beer-centric recreation (and all the profit windfalls therefrom), not to mention advantageous connections within Cleveland's business elite, it's a wonder they need public monies at all.

Par for the (Metroparks) course in this town.
