The Spirit of Goodyear, that glorious Akron-based blimp that hovers over sports stadiums, is heading to Florida for its imminent retirement.

The company will be rolling out its new Goodyear NT airships next spring. These new rigs are about 25 percent larger and more efficient.

"The Spirit of Goodyear gave up its hangar space for the construction of the new Goodyear NT airship and has been moored outside the past months," Nancy Ray, director of Goodyear's global airship program, says. "With winter on the way and the blimp's retirement coming up, it's time for the Spirit of Goodyear to move south."

You can share your favorite Goodyear blimp stories on the company's Facebook page and/or via the blimp's Twitter account. The Spirit of Goodyear will be hanging out over the Akron area today and tomorrow, giving residents one last chance to say goodbye and whisper sweet nothings skyward.
