Guide to Kulchur Wants to Expand, Start Publishing House, Employ 20 People

Gordon Square's bookstore and zinemaking co-op Guide to Kluchur has launched a crowdfunding campaign to transform from an LLC to a Worker-Owned Cooperative and to purchase equipment necessary to become a fully functioning publishing house.

In its appeal for donations, GTK says it hopes to employ 20 people at $15 per hour.

"The core of our expansion plan involves purchasing a higher quality, more automated binder that will be able to produce 350 books per hour, seven times our previous capacity," says the IndieGoGo fundraising page.

"This increased capacity, coupled with the nearly twenty commercial book printing jobs we’ve secured for the next twelve months, will allow us to triple our business income over the previous year."

The bookstore also intends to move to a much larger space in Detroit-Shoreway. Owner RA Washington was last year rumored to be eyeing the former Yellowcake location, but the Detroit/W. 65th corner spot is soon to open as the Superelectric Pinball Parlor, so another first floor location is in the works, potentially the vacant spot next to Sweet Moses?

Guide to Kulchur secured a $5,000 grant from Jumpstart, which allowed them to begin the process of press expansion. Their current $20,000 fundraising goal is designed to get them the rest of the way. The store notes that it is much more than a bookstore, having hosted more than 200 forums and free shows since its founding in 2013 and becoming a hub for marginalized voices in Cleveland.
