St. Patrick's Day is traditionally a day of drink and debauchery. But Gunselman's Tavern in Fairview Park will nevertheless host its inaugural Leprechaun Chase 5K at 9 a.m. that morning.
The bar and restaurant has teamed up with Hermes Sports & Events, Sibling Revelry Brewing, Tullamore D.E.W., Ohio Irish American News and ABC Trophy to put on the event. The start and finish will take place just outside Gunselman's Tavern, and during the race, a leprechaun will appear on the course. Racers who finish ahead of the leprechaun will receive an additional award, and the first 200 racers will receive a custom finisher medal and T-shirt.
"Our race is the suburban alternative for racers that don't want to fight the crowds of a Saturday St. Patrick's Day in downtown Cleveland," says Gunselman's owner David Grace in a press release announcing the event. "It's a great course running through the sloping numbered streets of Fairview Park and the leprechaun is going to be fast. We'll let him loose about midway through the race, so you'll know him when you see him."
Gunselman's will host a post-race party featuring live music, jumbo corned beef sandwiches and green beer. Registration, which costs $25 for adults, starts at 7 a.m. on race day.
