By now you probably know that Jerry Tomko, father of Brett Tomko, named the Cavaliers. The team had held a contest for a name and Tomko submitted "Cavaliers" with an essay and that was the winner in a vote of newspaper readers. He was supposed to get a signed basketball but never did.
One finally arrived in the mail the other day:
The basketball is signed by the current Cavs players. And the plaque reads, "As a part of our 40th season, we present this in special recognition and thanks of your personal role in Cavaliers history. . . . You were an important and unique part of the launch of the Cavaliers franchise, and your words will ring true over time."Forty years ago, Tomko submitted an essay with his entry, characterizing the Cleveland Cavaliers as "a group of daring fearless men, whose life's pact was never surrender, no matter what the odds."
