Once the new and improved Public Square opens the center of downtown will be ready to stand alone as a public space but it will also serve as a venue of sorts for any number of temporary events.

Today we got a look at one of them.

Three years' worth of temporary art installations are coming, made possible by a $1.5 million grant from LAND Studio of the Char and Chuck Fowler Family Foundation of Cleveland.

The very first installation by the the Italian art collective Cracking Art will be in place in time for the Republication National Convention. The square will be covered in hundreds of giant colorful animals (it actually looks a lot less terrifying than it sounds).

Once completed, the installation will be the biggest Cracking Art installation since its founding in 1983.
