Law Blog Says Football Player Should Play Football, Not Go to Law School

The Browns signed Andrew Sweat, an undrafted rookie out of Ohio State. But then Sweat changed his mind and decided to pass on the pigskin thing and go to law school instead. What with all the concussions, brain injuries, and suicides relating to professional football players in the news, it seems Sweat would be applauded for his decision. As he said on his Twitter account, he's had concussion symptoms, and "health trumps football any day." Plus, he was an undrafted rookie, and his prospects of piling up a long career in the NFL and a bank account full of Benjamins weren't great.

Above the Law, a law blog that we hope is written by some guy named Bob Loblaw, disagrees.

Now, instead of attending camp and trying to make the team, Sweat has decided to give up on his NFL career and attend law school instead. Not even a very highly ranked law school. More like the Cleveland Browns of law schools. [Sweat got into law school at Pittsburgh, Duquesne, West Virginia, Florida and the University of Miami.]

I can't know if Sweat's decision is being partially motivated by all the media attention focused on the long-term health consequences of playing in the NFL. But I'd bet all the money in my pocket that Sweat has not been paying attention to the media coverage of the long-term professional and financial damage that can be done by going to law school…

Sweat responded by saying that his dad runs a good law firm, so he's doing pretty fine in life.
