More Orchestra Fun at Blossom and All the Other Classical Music Fun You Should Catch This Week

[image-1]Now that ChamberFest Cleveland has played its last distinguished notes and Encore Chamber Music moves from Gates Mills to University Circle, the focus of summer concerts shifts to Kent State University, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the Blossom Music Festival in Cuyahoga Falls.

The Kent/Blossom Festival continues with a faculty concert by the Miami String Quartet and pianist Spencer Myer on Wednesday, July 5 at 7:30 pm in Ludwig Recital Hall on the Kent State campus. Fans of Mozart, Mendelssohn & Brahms, take note: the program includes Mozart’s Quartet in G, K. 387, “Spring,” Mendelssohn’s Quartet No. 5 in E-flat, and Brahms’s Piano Quartet No. 2 in A. This weekend also features the first four performances by Kent/Blossom student chamber ensembles. Three of them (Friday, July 7 at 7:30 pm, Saturday, July 8 at 2:00 pm, and Sunday, July 9 at 7:30 pm) will take place in Ludwig Recital Hall, while the concert on Sunday at 2:00 pm will be held at the Hudson Library and Historical Society. All student concerts are free.

Encore Chamber Music will move its operations to the Cleveland Institute of Music this week, and two performances ill take place in Mixon Hall this weekend. On Friday, July 7 at 7:00 pm, “Secret and Romantic Affairs” features Jinjoo Cho and Pasha Sabouri, violins, Jan Grüning and Yu Jin, violas, and Stella Ye Lin Cho and Amit Even-Tov, cellos, in Clara Schumann’s Three Romances, Prokofiev’s Suite from Romeo and Juliet, Piazzolla’s La Calle 92, and Brahms’s Sextet No. 1 in B-flat.

On July 9 at 2:00 pm, Encore will present “Sunday Unplugged No. 3,” adding violinists Arianna Dotto, Joseph Kromholz, and Rachel Sandman, cellist Mindy Park, and pianist Hyun Soo Kim to Friday’s ensemble. Sunday’s program includes Kevin Puts’s Dark Vigil, William Bolcom’s Three Rags for String Quartet, and Dvořák’s Piano Quintet No. 2 in A. It all starts with dessert and coffee at 1:00 pm. Tickets to both events are available online.

Music Director Franz Welser-Möst will lead both Cleveland Orchestra concerts this weekend at Blossom. On Saturday, July 8 at 8:00 pm, the program includes Beethoven’s second symphony and Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique. On Sunday, July 9 at 7:00 pm, soprano Erin Wall will be featured in a night of opera arias and orchestral music including overtures by Mozart (Magic Flute), Rossini (William Tell), and Verdi (La Forza del destino) and excerpts from dramatic works by Dvořák, Richard Strauss, Mascagni and Verdi.
