New Ohio City Sandwich Shop Satisfies Late-Night Cravings

Late-night noshers, rejoice! There is a new late-night pig-out option in Ohio City. Opened this week by chef Nate Williams, who for a dozen years worked in the fine-dining kitchens of Flying Fig, Bogtrotters Doorstep (1848 W. 25th St., 216-861-5515) will dispense high-quality, hand-crafted sandwiches until 3 a.m. on weekends.

"I've always wanted to do something fun like this," says Williams. "And there was a need on the street for something late-night and quick."

Located in a separate side entryway to Old Angle Tavern, Bogtrotters will feature Williams' take on a half-dozen classic American sandwiches. The uniting theme, he says, is that all sandwiches include au jus. All meats are marinated, brined and roasted in-house, as are the beef, pork and turkey au jus sauces.

Sandwiches include a Philly, with roast beef, grilled onions and cheese sauce; Chicago, with roast beef, provolone and peppers, Porkopolis, with pork loin, provolone and sautéed rapini; and Italian, with sausage, grilled onions and peppers, and provolone. All are built on sturdy seven-inch baguettes from On The Rise Bakery.

When ordering, guests should specify if they'd like their sandwich dry, wet or soaked. Dry means au jus on the side; wet sandwiches receive a good sauce shower; and soaked subs are just that. Ask for "crunch" and the sandwich will be sprinkled with crushed potato chips. All sandwiches cost $9.

"There's 6 to 8 ounces of meat," adds Williams. "It's a big, sloppy sandwich."

The shop is designed mostly for carry-out, containing just two stools at a small rail. But customers are welcome to take their food into Old Angle to enjoy along with a beer.

As for the name. Williams says that a "doorstep" is Irish slang for a large sandwich, while "bogtrotter" refers to a bit of a rogue.

The sandwich shop is closed Sunday and Monday.
