Nina Turner, who lost in the congressional special election to Shontel Brown in August and who may seek a rematch next year, has endorsed Justin Bibb in the Cleveland Mayor's Race.
Turner, who endorsed Sandra Williams in the primary, announced Thursday that she was backing Bibb, saying she believed his administration would center the lives of the poor, working poor and barely middle class.
"Voters in Cleveland face a clear choice about the kind of city they want to live in," she said in a statement provided to the media. "Our next mayor must be someone capable of addressing the systemic challenges that have left so many people behind—from increasing the minimum wage to tackling extreme poverty and violence, to dealing with the climate crisis, and building an inclusive and fair economy."
Turner filed paperwork last month with the Federal Election Commission to keep her campaign committee operational, but told Scene that she has not made up her mind about running in OH-11 in 2022. The FEC paperwork was the result of a procedural decision, she said, which gave her flexibility as she considers her options.
Justin Bibb also yesterday secured the endorsement of the United Autoworkers, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America Northeast Ohio Community Action Program Council (UAW NEO CAP), which represents 3,500 workers in Cleveland.
Bibb's competitor, Cleveland City Council President Kevin Kelley, was endorsed by the local Teamsters union Wednesday. The Teamsters and their 2,890 registered voters had backed Dennis Kucinich in the mayoral primary but said they decided to back Kelley after hosting a forum with both runoff candidates.
“At the end of the day, the overlaying issue is public safety," said Cal Pecoraro, Secretary-Treasurer & Principal Officer of Teamsters Local 507, "and only one candidate had safety in mind, Kevin Kelley. Kevin Kelley will do what it takes to get the city back on track."
