Update: The Cuyahoga County medical examiner today identified the victim of the Saturday night shooting by an off-duty Cleveland police officer outside the Corner Alley in University Circle as 21-year-old Thomas Yatsko.

Two days ago Cleveland police identified Sgt. Dean Graziolli as the officer who shot and killed Yatsko over the weekend. Graziolli is a 26-year veteran of the department and was made sergeant in 2002. He received treatment at University Hospitals Saturday night for bruises and cuts to his face and body he says he suffered during the attack. He's been placed on three days of administrative leave and will then be assigned to light gym duty as the investigation continues.

(Original story 1/14/18): An off-duty Cleveland police sergeant shot and killed a man just after 11 p.m. Saturday night at the Corner Alley bar in University Circle, local media are reporting.

The unnamed officer had escorted several patrons off the premises after a fight broke out inside, a Cleveland Police press release said. Witnesses said one of the escorted men, a 21-year-old, came back and began attacking the officer just outside the establishment.

The officer fired multiple shots at the man — one witness heard two shots — and after attempts to provide emergency medical treatment, the man was taken to the nearby University Hospitals, where he was pronounced dead.

The unnamed Cleveland police sergeant was also reportedly injured and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Cleveland Police's Use of Deadly Force Investigation Team (UDFIT) is now investigating the incident. At this point, there has been no reporting suggesting the attacker was armed.
