Ohio takes home Prestigious Toilet Award

For the second year in a row, the title of “America’s Best Restroom” has plopped on a Buckeye State john. The winner? Jungle Jim’s, a food market near Cincinnati, just long enough to hold it on the drive from last year’s number one, Wendell’s Restaurant in Westerville, a sphincterific suburb of Columbus. Jim’s was one of five finalists selected from a nationwide pool of restaurants, hotels, casinos, and a handful of overly ambitious truck stops. Voters were asked to rate the finalists on hygiene, public access and, um…style. “They’ve got to be clean,” says David Brandt, who ran the voting. “But they’ve also got to be memorable.” Jim’s – with its “chic jungle motif” hidden by port-o-let doors – flushed away the competition, which included the floor-to-ceiling views from the 64th floor of the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas, and a perennial craptender at the Vermont Marble Museum. “You could practically eat off the floors in there,” says Brandt, who brought matches to Jim’s but never needed to light one. Jungle Jim himself? Couldn’t come to the phone. Staffers at the store say he was last seen whistling with a newspaper under his arm. – Jason Nedley
