Perry Nuclear Plant is Leaking, But it's No Big Deal

The PD reports that a water sample outside the Perry nuclear power plant contained nearly double the concentration of Tritium, as regulated by Federal law. It's just a minor leak, all the relevant officials have hastened to insist, and no other radioactive isotopes have been found anywhere else, including in the plant's underground drainage system.

Workers discovered the leak Monday in a water valve housed in a "hallway-sized steam tunnel" running from a giant steam turbine. One spokesperson said a camera monitors the valve and picked up the leak as well. It manifested itself as a "spray of water and steam."

Testing will continue today, but most scientists seem to think the leak isn't all that serious. It's not even worth stocking up on bottled water, one of them told the PD.

FirstEnergy, the plant's owner, has a zero tolerance policy for leaks of any size and severity and is dealing with the issue even as we speak.
