Plain Dealer columnist Regina Brett has taken some unfair hits, in my opinion, from some members of the black community over critical statements she has made in her column about the conduct of some elements in our black society.
While I view several of her recent comments about the plight of blacks as a search for truth and seeking solutions, others in a fit of anger and emotional hysteria have interpreted her comments as demeaning and racist. Or as
one letter writer to Scene [June 13] wrote: “…trying to wedge a wider ax between the entire community, as opposed to building an open dialogue of resolution.”
To the contrary, Brett is actually trying to open a dialogue, as demonstrated in her column June 20, titled “
Here’s a plan for saving city,” in which she features a plan submitted by Kimberly Brown, a black lady who ran for mayor in 2005. Here again, we see Brett searching for solutions from the community that might bring closure to its dismal outlook.
It’s time blacks stop viewing all whites as their enemy and start focusing on the real enemies within. Anyone, regardless of race or color, that is out to hurt me is my enemy. And right now I am focusing on local black enemies in politics, the ministries and civic community who continue to sell us out by consorting and conniving with our white enemies. Because if we can’t get rid of the enemies within the race, then we will never get rid of those outside the race.
