Rock Hall's New Book Series Makes It Funky Now

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will launch a book series at its new Library and Archives next week, and the first event should be a great one: Writer RJ Smith will talk about his terrific bio, The One: The Life and Music of James Brown.

This reading will take place at 7 p.m. on August 23 at the Library Reading Room of the Library and Archives (which is located at 2809 Woodland Avenue).

Smith's book — our favorite music-related one of 2012 — digs deep into Brown's history for one of the most absorbing bios we've read this decade. He doesn't uncover too much new info about the Godfather of Soul, but he puts it all together (and there's a lot to put together) in a way that makes sense of Brown's messy, complicated, and fascinating life.

After his reading, Smith will field questions from the audience and sign copies of The One.

The event is free, but you still need a ticket to get in. They'll be available at 10 a.m. tomorrow. Head here to RSVP your spot. —Michael Gallucci
