Ryan Puente has been named Executive Director of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party, the party's chairwoman Shontel Brown announced today.
The 28-year-old Puente currently serves as the president of the Cuyahoga County Young Democrats and will replace the party's interim Executive Director, Helen Sheehan, who has served in her role voluntarily since January. Puente officially begins today.
“We are excited to welcome Ryan as he assumes this leadership role," Brown said in an emailed statement. "His enthusiasm, passion and commitment to Democratic values will be important as we expand our core voter base and grassroots team and increase voter turnout in November.”
Puente will manage the party's day-to-day operations and spearhead get-out-the-vote efforts in preparation for the 2018 elections. He joins the party's leadership from the Neighborhood Leadership Institute, where he has served as a Community Education and Advocacy Manager. He has also worked on a number of local Democratic campaigns and interned at both the White House and in the office of U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown.
In 2017, Puente managed the campaigns of both Rick Raley and Tom Bullock, both of whom lost their races for seats in the Ohio General Assembly. He also performed fieldwork
for Marty Sweeney.
“I appreciate the chairwoman’s confidence in me to continue building our party," Puente said in a statement. "I am committed to engage fellow Democrats and will work relentlessly to increase voter turnout and elect Democratic candidates both locally and statewide.”
Puente's Young Dems were among the vocal supporters
of Shontel Brown's candidacy for Party Chair in June. Brown handily defeated the ticket of C. Ellen Connally and Trevor Elkins, representing the party's more progressive wing.
