From 6 to 9 p.m. this Friday, Jan. 30, SPACES hosts an opening reception for two new installations and an experimental group exhibition.
Ever thought to yourself, “What if This City Was a Mountain?” Cleveland-based artist Andy Curlowe did. Drawing inspiration from Cleveland’s architecture, topography, salt mines, bridges, streetlights, etc., Curlowe has created a 3D scale mountain reminiscent of late 19th century Swiss and Austrian relief artists’ interpretation of the unknown. Similar techniques were used by the Royal Air Force to visualize unknown terrain during WWII.
“Andy's residency at SPACES is particularly meaningful because it's given us the opportunity to help a local artist get outside of his usual practice and create something that he otherwise wouldn't have been able to do on his own,” explains SPACES Executive Director Christina Vassallo. “His idea immediately resonated with us because of its potential to spark conversation about this city, in an imaginative way.”
Additionally, a collective of more than 40 artists known as the Institute for New Feeling (IfNf) will be exhibiting a curated collection of works from Felt Book, an upcoming online collaborative publication of “home remedies inspired by the structure of Fluxus scores, YouTube tutorials and eHow articles.” Visitors are encouraged to sign up for a free eFELT subscription to receive free product samples in the gallery, as well as additional weekly remedies via email.
Meanwhile, The Vault at SPACES will debut Cleveland in My Mind’s Eye, an eclectic range of videos collectively composing a very complex portrayal of Northeast Ohio. Highlights include both of Mike Polk Jr.’s Hastily Made Cleveland Tourism Videos, Michael Symon’s Ode to Cleveland from 2004, a couple of gems featuring Marc Brown of Norton Furniture commercial fame, Alexander Kernbaum and Andrew Horchler’s time lapse video of Veteran’s Memorial Bridge shot from Key Tower and Anonymous’ recent video message to Cleveland Police following the death of Tamir Rice. #ThisIsCLE, anyone…?
Can’t make it Friday? Curlowe will continue his residency at SPACES through Friday, Feb. 6, and everything will remain on view through Mar. 27.
