The Black Market Offers a Way to Namaste with Punk, Metal and Goth Yoga

Emma Jochum / The Black Market

Since 2015, The Black Market (5407 Detroit Road) has solidified itself as Cleveland's go-to stop for all things alternative. While the spot is a haven for weirdos looking to purchase items outside of the norm, the popularity of The Black Market's alternative yoga classes have turned the location into one of the most enticing spots in Gordon Square.

Emma Jochum, owner and operator of The Black Market definitely sees the benefits of alternative yoga.

"I think often times people turn to more extreme genres of music when they have experienced stress, frustration, anger, depression, trauma, etc.," she says. "Yoga has been such an essential tool for dealing with these things in my life personally, and by creating these themed classes, we are reaching out to an audience of like minded individuals that may never have tried traditional yoga otherwise."

With offerings like Doomyasa (Doom Metal Yoga), Doom and Drone Guided Meditation, Yin Yoga, Wild Freedom Punk Yoga and Goth Yoga, there are plenty of opportunities for Clevelanders to align their chakras to hard rockin' tunes.

"A lot of times people will try these classes just for the novelty of the music. They may not be into yoga, but they’re super into doom metal so they stop by to see what its about," Jochum says.

Past offerings include Heavy Metal Yoga, Progmetal Yoga, Hardcore and astrological themed classes. The current yoga schedule is below:

Sundays – Doom Metal Yoga with Meg Ruggiero 1:30-2:30 p.m.
Mondays – Wild Freedom Punk Yoga with Shel Erba 7-8:15 p.m.
Tuesdays – Yin Yoga with Meg Ruggiero 7-8 p.m.
1st/3rd Wednesdays – Guided Meditation with Christine Lewis 7-8 p.m.
2nd/4th Wednesdays – Doom & Drone Guided Meditation with Emma Jochum 7-7:30 p.m.
Thursdays – Goth Yoga with Trish Metzger 7-8 p.m.

All ages and levels are welcome to each class. No pre-registration is required. Yoga classes are $10 each and meditation classes are donation based. For more information and updates on future classes, check out The Black Market on Facebook.
