The Kent Blossom Music Festival concludes this weekend with a variety of concerts presented by both faculty and students. Catch the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio (pianist Joseph Kalichstein, violinist Jaime Laredo, and cellist Sharon Robinson) in an evening that includes André Previn’s Trio No. 2, Ravel’s Trio in a, and Mendelssohn’s Trio No. 1 in d on Wednesday, July 31 at 7:30 pm in Kent State University’s Ludwig Recital Hall. Fresh on the heels of last weekend’s side-by-side performance with The Cleveland Orchestra, students of the Festival showcase their chamber music abilities in a number of free concerts this week from Thursday to Saturday. Hear works ranging from Amy Beach’s Piano Quintet in f-sharp to Strauss’ Metamorphosen Septet to Madeleine Dring’s Trio for Flute, Oboe, and Piano, and everything in between. The Cleveland Orchestra and the Blossom Festival Chorus take on Mozart’s “Great” Mass in c-minor at the Summers@Severance concert on Friday, August 2 at 7:00 pm in Severance Hall. Matthew Halls conducts the unfinished masterpiece, which is often considered one of Mozart’s greatest works. The featured soloists are Joélle Harvey, soprano, Krisztina Szabo, mezzo-soprano, Paul Appleby, tenor, and Michael Sumuel, bass-baritone.
The Orchestra is back at Blossom on Saturday, August 3 at 8:00 pm for two other massive works: Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 (“Emperor”) and Zemlinsky’s The Mermaid (Dee Seejungfrau), a lush, 45-minute long tone poem based on Hans Christian Andersen’s 1836 tale. Ohio Light Opera’s summer repertory is still in full swing, with a smattering of both matinees and evening performances this week. Gilbert & Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance, Sondheim’s Into the Woods, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific, and other musical delights are all up and running.
