Cleveland is quickly becoming the Hollywood of the Midwest with the likes of the Avengers and Fast & Furious franchises shooting in town. Now, Tom Hanks is returning to his acting roots to encourage TV and movie industry in the region.

Hanks is actually a Cali native, but he made his stage debut in a play in Cleveland, and the city has had a special place in his heart ever since. He'll be a guest during the two events sponsored by the Greater Cleveland Film Commission on Dec. 2. The first is a fundraiser at the Intercontinental Hotel, and then Hanks will speak to area high school and college students at Cuyahoga Community College.

“The fact that he would take time out of his incredibly busy schedule to come out to Cleveland to help us build the industry here is more than anybody could ask for,” Ivan Schwartz, Cleveland film commissioner, told Deadline. Schwartz has worked with Hanks on several projects.

The Greater Cleveland Commission is a nonprofit and relies on donations.
